Legal Counsel

This position will sit onsite in an Anthem office, preferred locations include: St. Louis, MO, Mason, OH Indianapolis, IN or Louisville, KY.

This position will support the Medicaid provider solutions team in Nebraska and Missouri for government business with the possibility of supporting additional markets for government, commercial insured and self-funded business. Primary duties include but are not limited to:

  • Proactively assist provider contracting staff with legal issues that arise during contract negotiations.

  • Review proposed contract language changes; draft alternative language to protect the company's interests when needed.

  • Support the roll-out of a new provider contract template with the provider networks.

  • Utilize contract management software to review custom provisions and documentation of required approvals.

  • Support value-based contracting and negotiation of shared savings or risk arrangements.

  • Support provider termination hearings and mediations or disputes prior to litigation.

  • Assist in early resolution of provider disputes to avoid litigation; interface with opposing counsel as needed and assisting on settlement agreements as necessary.

  • Review provider communications, including manuals, newsletters and material change notices, to ensure compliance with legal and contractual requirements.

  • Prepare settlement agreements, letters of intent, confidentiality agreements and other documents as needed.

  • Learns about risk identification and mitigation in the context of the health insurance industry to help identify and evaluate risk with business strategies; propose alternatives to minimize risk where applicable.

  • Work with higher level attorneys on various corporate initiatives.

  • Support compliance team on provider agreement filings.

  • Perform legal research and provide guidance on a range of health law, contractual and operational matters.

  • Provide statutory/regulatory interpretation affecting the company's interactions with providers.


  • Requires a JD; current license to practice law; 3 years of specific industry and/or technical legal experience post licensure; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background.


  • Government business-Medicare or medicaid experience is preferred.

  • Experience working with providers is preferred.
